How long will the lights last?

1. How will the lights be powered?

Extra low voltage power input 24VDC for total safety

2. Will the equipment harm the tree?

No. The fixing method used is a specialised system designed for expanding with the trees development. All fixings are stainless steel, so as to not rust into the tree. The lights are low voltage and give off no infra-red or ultra-violet light. They produce very little heat.

3. What about maintenance?

Due to the incredible life span of the LED lights and expandable fixings, an installation is maintenance free and will last a lifetime.

4. Is there a fire risk?

No. All equipment used has passed rigorous safety checks. Due to the high efficiency of LED technology, the heat generated is far less than that of a standard spotlight.

5. How deep will the cables go in the ground?

Cabling will be laid within plastic conduit inside a trench of a minimum of 18" deep.

6. Is it possible to have the lights solar powered?

Yes. Due to the high efficiency of the LED lighting technology, the power needed to run the display is minimal. Therefore it is possible to source an adequate solar panel system to accommodate for this demand.

7. Will you need access to the house?

Access will be required to install the controller unit and to connect to the mains power supply. However, the controller can be installed in a permanent outdoor setting using a fully rated IP65 waterproof enclosure.

8. How long will it take?

An average project for a single mature tree will generally take 3 days + a demo session after the equipment has been installed to explain how to use the system.

9. Are you qualified?

Our team comprises of Climbers - who are fully-qualified tree surgeons and hold NPTC City & Guilds certifications, including aerial rescue techniques. A fully-qualified Electrician is on hand to complete the installation.

10. What will the effect be like in the winter without leaves?

The effects achieved in winter can be just as stunning as when the tree is in leaf. With the ability to change between 16.7 million different colours at the touch of a button, this seasonal change presents an exciting opportunity to give your tree a completely different feel. For example an old English Oak washed with subtle whites and greys can give an eerie impression.

11. Will you need to drive on the lawn?

Every step will be taken to ensure that there is minimal disruption to your grounds. On smaller projects there is no real benefit to having a vehicle at the base of the tree, but on large projects (multiple tree lighting displays) it may be necessary to position a small 4x4 in a position suitable for using as a control centre, to co-ordinate the displays and to get the desired effects, before permanently installing the control equipment.

12. How many of you will be needed to set them up?

This is decided by the size of the project. Usually most displays can be completed by a team of four. Two fully-qualified tree climbers, one fully-qualified electrician and one groundsman.

13. Will the equipment rust?

No. All the equipment used is fully weather / waterproof, IP65 rated.

14. Will the cables be visible on the tree?

Every step is taken to ensure all equiment is best situated on the tree. The cable runs along the branches and enters flexible conduit, which starts at the top of the main trunk. All cabling is positioned taking into account the main focal points where the tree will be viewed from.

15. What colour will the cables be?

20. Will you be doing any work on the tree before setting up the lights?

Depending on the tree it may be necessary to perform certain aspects of tree surgery. This often includes crown thin outs and deadwood removal to maximise the potential for the display.

22. What is the best method of payment?

The best method of payment is by Direct Debit, but cheques or cash are both accepted.

23. Can I choose exactly where I want the lights to go?

Yes, but it is preferred to allow us to use our judgement and expertise in order to get the best display for your tree. However, if you have a particular look in mind we are more than happy to discuss this to ensure you get any effect you desire.

24. Is there a discount for two trees or more?

As every tree is different we are unable to set a standard price for an installation. Each tree is treated as an individual project and has to be priced accordingly. However, on a multiple tree display it can work out cheaper as it may be is possible to share the equipment controlling the lights in the various trees, dependant on the number of lights used and the size of the trees.

25. What is the biggest tree you can light?

No job is too big!

26. What is the smallest tree you can light?

No job is too small!

27. Will it deter birds and animals from nesting in the tree?

No. As the majority of the tree canopy will not contain any lights there will be many suitable locations for birds to nest freely. Also, as the lights give off minimal heat any wildlife in the tree will not be disturbed.

28. If my tree requires work after the lights are installed will this affect them?

Tree surgery can be performed as long as the system is turned off and unplugged from the mains power source, and any lighting equipment is carefully removed if necessary. It is strongly advisable to use a reputable company using fully-qualified and trained staff. At ArtisTree Lighting all our operatives are fully qualified tree surgeons, capable of undertaking any aspect of tree surgery. By choosing us for your future tree surgery requirements, you can feel confident that your tree and installed lighting equipment will be in safe hands.

29. Why can I not do it myself?

Tree climbing is a highly dangerous profession and must not be attempted by any untrained person(s). To do so would risk certain death or permanent disability. To install this equipment is a very specialised task that is only made possible by combining several years of experience in commercial tree surgery/climbing and the special effects industry.

30. Can we watch?

By all means but please do not stand directly under or near the tree for the duration of the project. This poses a health and safety risk and work would have to stop immediately. For a public place or anywhere that there is a risk of people/animals getting too close to the project, it would be necessary for us to cordon off the site with cones and tape.

31. What hours will you be working?

Due to the nature of the work we cannot test the lights until the evening. Therefore we work from 9-5 on a project, but have to return in the evening to perform the necessary testing procedures.

32. Is the process noisy?

No. The process is very quiet and completely self contained. The only time that we will be noisy is if we have to perform any tree surgery before we can begin the equipment installation. This is due to the machinery used, mainly chainsaws and wood chippers.

33. Can you provide visual aids as to what it looks like before we go ahead?

Yes. We have many full colour photographs enabling you to see just some of the colour combinations you can choose from. Please use our 'contact form' to request an information pack.

34. How much does it cost?

As every project is different, please use our 'contact form' to arrange for a free consultation (at your convenience) and a project estimate.

35. How long will the lights last?

This really depends on usage. If for example you set the lights to project full power white, the lights have an estimated life expectancy of 25,000 hours. If the lights are set to normal colour changing usage then they have an estimated life expectancy of an amazing 100,000 hours! This means you can enjoy your display for many years to come.
